Dear Supporters, Friends, and Families,

We would like to inform you of the recent announcement by the national office of Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Organization that it had changed its name to American Childhood Cancer Organization effective on March 25, 2010.  While we had received communication that a name change was being considered, we received the news after the organization had in fact already determined to make this change.

The national organization has requested all Candlelighters’ groups across the nation to join them in the name change and other changes enacted and to be enacted related to affiliation.

After careful consideration of the changes being made by the national organization in its mission statement, its imposition of requirements on affiliates and the name change, the Board of Directors of Candlelighters of Brevard, Inc., has decided not to join the national organization in the name change or agree to the new affiliate relationship which would include obligatory fundraising on behalf of the national organization as well as other obligations.

We are hopeful of maintaining our relationship which allows for the continued of the use of the name Candlelighters by our group. We will keep you advised of the results of our efforts.

Our organization has always prided itself on focusing our efforts exclusively on the support of local families and is committed to continuing that work as our primary mission.  While the goals of the newly named national organization are honorable, they are in conflict with our mission statement in a manner that is incompatible with our goals and historic efforts.  We wish the American Childhood Cancer Organization the best of luck with their new mission and are sure they wish us the same in our efforts as our paths appear to diverge.

If you have any questions, please contact Executive Director Carrie Wam at 321-728-5600.

Sincerely,

Paul Phelps, Chairman Board of Directors of Candlelighters of Brevard, Inc.

Childhood Cancer Month
Senate Passes Allard-Clinton 'National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day' Resolution
May 23, 2008
WASHINGTON, D.C.– September 13, 2008 will now be recognized as "National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day" as a result of a Senate resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Wayne Allard (R-Colo.)
and Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY).

"Never before in history has the dream of eliminating childhood cancer been so attainable, yet seemed so elusive," said Senator Allard. "We live in a nation where the effectiveness of treatments and technology offer hope to children who dream of a bright future. Each case of childhood cancer is a very personal tragedy that can strike any family with children, at anytime, anywhere. In setting aside September 13th to recognize this battle on cancer, we continue of our efforts to draw attention to the victims of childhood cancer and the great work of the families and organizations who continue the fight."

"We have made tremendous strides in the fight against childhood cancer, but far too many children still suffer and lose their lives to this illness. The more we know as a nation the better able we will be to prevent and treat the disease and help those who are battling and surviving pediatric cancers. National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day is an opportunity to reach out to all Americans with the facts about childhood cancer, and this day will be an important symbol of our commitment on all days to find a cure," said Senator Clinton.

AND a very special thank you to the creative team of
Joanie DuPont and Aileen Mouritsen.

Jel Sert is committed to support research funding and build awareness of childhood cancer.

Every school day, 46 children or two classrooms are diagnosed with cancer. Despite treatment successes, cancer remains the number one cause of death by disease of America’s children.

Steve Modaff, Marketing Manager, said “We at Jel Sert are thrilled to enter into this partnership with Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, to support research, and to stress the significance of increased knowledge about this disease. We hope our efforts will bring brighter futures for kids and teens with cancer.”

Candlelighters Executive Director, Ruth Hoffman agrees, “We have made tremendous strides in the fight against childhood cancer but far too many children still suffer and lose their lives to this illness. Sadly, 25% of children die within five years of their cancer diagnosis, and 2/3rds who do survive endure severe side effects from treatment, including cognitive deficits, organ failure, and secondary cancers. Together with Jel Sert’s support, we can provide hope to all children and teens diagnosed with this life-threatening disease.”
