Childhood cancer forever changes the lives
of children, their families and those around
them. Some go on to live full, productive
lives. Some go on to become our guardian
angels. Yet for those left behind, it doesn’t
have to be sad and lonely. Instead, it
should be a celebration of the lives lived
and the days shared together.
That’s what Crystal’s Walk is all about.
And it was indeed a walk to remember!
It was a glorious day filled with a magical
display of human kindness, love and compassion as we were joined by over 200
participants at the beautiful Gleason Park in
Indian Harbour Beach to walk for our children.
Children laughed and played in the bounce
house, while others were feasting on pizza,
hot dogs and snow cones! Tommy Trix joined
us, as always sharing his balloon making
talents with everyone and most enjoyable in
the background was our very own
“Candlelighter Band,” Rick LaClaire, Curt
Brown, Lee Scattergood, Geoff Thornton and
Steve Kabboord
Before the walk began, the children released
butterflies. All heads were tilted back in a
moment of awe as they fluttered into the
heavens like the angels they represented.
Cathy Kabboord, Crystal’s mom then read the
following:
Welcome and thank you for joining us today
and for being a part of a memorial walk in
Crystal’s name.
This event has come through Crystal’s life
and our family facing cancer, a disease with
no answers and infrequent cures.
Many of the Candlelighters supporters here
today are not only remembering Crystal’s
life but the life of someone special to them
that had to face cancer. Everyone of them
are angels, teaching life lessons for us
that remain in this changing world.
For us, some of these lessons that remain in
place of our children are; that we are not
our bodies. We are given bodies to
experience the world and in this world,
whatever we look for we will find. If we
look for the good, it’s everywhere. Look for
the bad, it is also there.
We must choose what we want. And be what we
want to see in the world. Fear and sameness
are our prison and love and change release
us to freedom.
Our decision to support the Candlelighters
came out of their support for us. Money
means nothing when your faced with cancer,
but the financial burdens are enormous. The
Candlelighters provided distractions from
the ongoing, horrible treatments. They
supported us with travel expenses and
housing. When you needed friendship and a
hug, they offered theirs.
Support should start at home. They are a
local organization helping local people. By
supporting them, it’s our way of helping the
local families and their children and we
thank you for joining us.
We each have to face our mortality alone,
but the love we give supports the strength
and courage to see it through.
God Bless,
The Kabboord Family
